Black Girl Blues

School Programme

In 2021 we designed, organised and piloted a 10-week programme helping year 9 girls across the UK navigate Black girlhood. Sessions included self-care practices, creative writing, dramatherapy and much more!

Sessions include self-care practices, creative writing, drama therapy and much more! On the programme participants connected with other Black Girls and learned how to use the arts as a tool for connection, self care and community.

Supported by Arts Council England, Bloomsbury and Square Peg.

Here’s what participants had to say:

“Black Girl Blues has helped me with mindfulness within myself. I’m very grateful to be able to be a part of this program :D”

“Now I know that wellbeing is looking after yourself and treating yourself with love. Self care allows us to stay connected with ourselves and keep going”

“My school is predominantly white, it’s great spending time with people that look like me because I feel a lot more related to them”

Key stats:

75% of participants felt their mental health has improved since joining the BGB programme

100% of participants learnt the valuable, helpful skills to support themselves if they’re having a difficult day (primarily creative skills)
